Call for Artists for the 2011 Holiday Show

The show has changed dramatically and yet still kept the small, special, unique appeal you all commented you loved about it last year. So here's the low down on it:

The show is now the first 3 weekends in December. We decided not to grow the number of vendors because the small, intimate feel works well for everyone, but that the show had potential to grow in other ways. It will now run Thursday - Sunday from December 1-18. Now don't stress.... you don't have to book all 3 weekends if you've already made plans, but you can if it suits you. And if you want to do the show, but can't be here for the Thursday / friday evenings that's ok too because we will be able to provide you booth staff for those nights.

The Fort has successful received a grant to ramp up the event to be similar in scope to their Fort Fright event. There will be seasonal displays throughout the venue, increased live performances like choirs, increased signage, some better lighting and advertising as well.

The wineries will be returning and there will also be food vendors on site too.

As always, it's a first come first serve system. So get your application with your preferences in asap. If you're interested in participating start by sending me 3 photos of your work to send to the jury and 1 of your display.

Marie Girard

Marie owns her glass studio in Georgetown, ON, where she creates functional art pieces made of fused glass. An art form less known than blown or stained glass, fused glass dates back to 2000 B.C. and has enjoyed a revival in popularity since the 1960’s.

The purpose of her creation is to bring a functional object to become a unique artistic creation. Color, texture, and transparency are fundamentally taken into consideration in the process of designing each individual piece. Being able to deliver harmony between functionality and elegance in each object is fuelling her passion. The breadth of glass techniques and its multiple possibilities keeps the challenge fresh and the passion alive for glass art. Glass - a hard yet fragile medium – makes it most interesting to work with.

Deborah Clarke, So Lovely Jewellery

Originally from England, Deborah now lives in Toronto with her family. For the last five years she has been exploring and experimenting with the art of jewellery making. She is largely self-taught but has taken some formal instruction from George Brown College and Central Technical College in Toronto. Her jewellery is hand-crafted using sterling silver, fresh-water pearls and a variety of stones. Deborah’s designs range from traditional chain-mail to a more whimsical approach. Colour, shape and texture are key in Deborah’s jewellery which appeals to the younger and the more mature woman alike.

Betty Jane Ware, Soapmaker

Betty Jane Ware is an herbalist, soapmaker, and owner of Goddess Blends. Starting with melt and pour, then on to find Hot Process, she has been making soap for a number of years. Her journey into soapmaking began from a rather different perspective than most of us: she is a practicing witch. One of the things a witch does to prepare for ritual is a bath or cleansing for the particular ritual. She notes ” I wanted to use something specifically for me that brought in the elements of whatever I was working on, this led me to soap making.”

Betty Jane started selling soap by accident, making too much soap for personal use. That first recipient loved it; the business started and has grown from that point. Betty Jane is a certified herbalist.

Mary Lynn Baker is a multi-talented, award-winning artist and craftswoman with a unique view of the human condition. She trained as a draftswoman before attending Toronto's Ontario College of Art and Design, where she studied fine arts. Aside from her technical brilliance, her many fans delight in her sense of whimsy and irony, which works its way into almost every piece of art Ms. Baker creates. Her pen-and-inks, paintings, and paper mache sculptures are in corporate and private collections all over the world.

She is a mixed media artist who loves to sculpt fantasy characters and creatures out of clay. Jayne has fun embellishing them with things she finds in nature like shells,moss,acorns,pinecones, pebbles or whatever she feels the character needs to bring them to life.She also makes medieval goblets which have crystals or semi-precious stones embedded in the clay.

Ken Waller, Woodcrafts

Ken has been an active woodturner since 1983. In the early years, this hobby provided a relaxing diversion from his fulltime job as an aerospace engineering officer with the Canadian air force. The hobby soon became a passion. Ken has been selling his creative works since 1996 at craft shows and local galleries. He routinely participates in the shows of both the Cumberland Arts and Crafts Guild and the Gloucester Craftsmen's Guild spring and Christmas shows, the Cloyne Showcase in Aug and the Ottawa Wood Show. Ken has been very active in the wood turning community. He was president of the Valley Wood turners (Ottawa) from Jan 2001 to Dec 2005 and has been a wood turning teacher for over ten years, having introduced over 250 students to the wonderful world of woodturning.

Ken retired from working with the military in 2005 and now lives permanently in his Sharbot Lake home. Ken works from a 1500 sq ft shop facility that includes a separate gallery/display area.

About the Artist

The pottery is owned and operated by Jane Thelwell who has been making pottery for 7 years. She graduated from Sheridan College's Craft & Design Program in April 2006.

Artist Statement

Clay is a natural substance which she have studied extensively for the "other" reasons. After spending 20 years in civil engineering where soil is investigated for its bearing capacity, grading, and plasticity, she is now considering the earth's materials from another perspective. Working with clay to make bowls, cups and plates offers an opportunity to think of the organic nature of our world and its inherent fragility.

The act of firing clay is not simply a straightforward thermo-chemical process; it also has the connotation of ancient magical transitions. The process of firing kilns, and in particular the salt kiln, offers many opportunities to witness the expressive potential of the atmospheric fluxes on the surfaces on the clay.

She endeavours to create forms and decoration that are a pleasure to experience in the home, and in particular, useful for the very important activity of eating with friends and family. Inspired by nature, she decorates her functional ware with images of flowers and fish.

For the past two terms, she has been studying Art History at Queen's University in Kingston. She believes the reading of liberal arts will broaden her humanistic outlook on the world; it helps to inform her work; and, heightens her appreciation of others' work.

In September 2006, she returned to Kingston, after spending the summer on the shores of Georgian Bay, to open Anglin Bay Pottery in a synergistic artist community at the National Grocers' Building Studios. The pottery is located at the mouth of the scenic Cataraquai River as it meets Lake Ontario. Anglin Bay Pottery produces functional ware for sale locally and throughout Ontario.

The show will take place at a unique venue. Each room will have 4-5 artists.

How to participate in the Fine Craft & Art Holiday Show:

1. We will not accept anyone selling any kind of mass-produced goods (this includes imported bags, clothes, soap & bath products or jewellery). All goods MUST be HAND-MADE by the vendor.
2. Vendors will be juried relative to the integrity, originality, level of craftsmanship and artistic merit of their work. These are Fine Craft & Artist events, therefore we are looking for art, not products.
3. Goods cannot be mass-produced, however, high-quality, limited signed editions of the registered vendor’s work are acceptable (e.g. postcards or photographs).
4. We reserve the right to deny registration to any applicant.
5. Your space will be determined based on your needs. The rooms are not standard shape / size, therefore booths must be flexible in set up and shape.
6. There are no one day spaces available.
7. Registration is for single artists only, artists may not share space.
8. No refunds will be given within 4 months prior to the show.
